The U.S. Department of State (DOS) updated its policy regarding how far in advance new international students may apply for a visa.  Where the previous limit was 120 days, the DOS announced that F and M student visas for new students can now be issued up to 365 days before the start date of their course of study.  It should be noted, however, that new international students still cannot enter the United States on an F or M visa more than 30 days before the program start date.  With many consulates abroad facing extensive backlogs, this policy change will give new students more time to schedule their visa interview.

F and M student visas for continuing students may be issued at any time, as long as the student is currently enrolled at a SEVP-approved school or institution and is in the SEVIS.  Continuing students may enter the United States at any time before classes start.
