Receipt notices for Form I-90 applications for green card renewal of expiring or expired green cards previously provided a 12-month extension of the validity of a green card. In an attempt to assist lawful permanent residents dealing with longer processing times, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced that effective September 26, 2022, it will automatically extend the validity of green cards for 24 months pending an active renewal application.
Receipt notices for newly filed Forms I-90 will reflect this update. Additionally, as of September 26, 2022, USCIS began printing amended receipt notices for individuals with a pending Form I-90. These receipt notices can be presented with an expired green card as evidence of continued status while Form I-90 is pending.
